Portends


Portends is the 3rd person singular simple present-tense form of the verb portend which has two meanings:
  1. To give a warning, omen or anticipatory indication of

  2. To signify, indicate or denote
The English dramatist William Shakespeare (1564 to 1616) wrote in The Tragedy of Cymbeline, King of Britain:
Last night the very gods showed me a vision -
I fast and prayed for their intelligence - thus:
I saw Jove's bird, the Roman eagle, winged
From the spongy south to this part of the west,
There vanished in the sunbeams; which portends,
Unless my sins abuse my divination,
Success to th' Roman host.
Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689 to 1762), wrote in her poem, The Politicians:
The screech-owl, with ill-boding cry,
Portends strange things, old women say;
